Deadly Choices launches new partnership with Coles and Nornie Bero
In early July, 17 lucky young winners of the Deadly Choices’ Deadly Maroons experience gathered in a Brisbane commercial kitchen for a very special morning of cooking and connection before Origin Game 3.
Led by chef and new Deadly Choices Ambassador, Nornie Bero, the group of children and parents were shown how to whip up the ultimate Good Quick Tukka – a protein-packed, veggie-filled omelette.
As the first event marking the official launch of the partnership between Deadly Choices and Coles, the cooking session was a great chance for the kids, who had all had a 715 Health Check and completed the Deadly Choices education program, to learn about healthy food choices from a world class chef.

For Bero, originally from the Komet Tribe of the Meriam people in the Torres Strait Islands, the event was an opportunity to build the young ones’ confidence by showcasing just how quick and easy good food can be.
“Coming on board with Deadly Choices as a new Ambassador is a real honour,” said Bero. “It’s a program that really cares about the health of kids – I wish it had been around when I was younger! When you get the opportunity to help young people care about what they put in their bodies, it’s a pleasure.”
Deadly Choices is Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander preventative health program empowering Mob to make healthy choices for themselves and their families. This includes being physically active, not smoking or vaping, connecting with the local Community Controlled Health Service for a 715 Health Check and eating healthy.
As part of the Deadly Choices and Coles partnership, Bero will be sharing a range of classic meals, including sop sop, chicken vermicelli and curry, that empower Mob to create healthy, simple, affordable and family friendly meals.
These will be shared through videos, recipe cards and a cookbook promoted to community and utilised in the Good Quick Tukka education program proudly supported by Health and Wellbeing Queensland.
“We’re really proud to launch this partnership between Coles, Deadly Choices and Nornie Bero,” said Sara Stuart, Kamilaroi woman and Coles Head of Indigenous Affairs.
“Coles has been providing healthy food and lifestyles to communities for over 100 years, so this was a beautiful way to launch a program that will teach young people to cook healthy food with their family. It’s a partnership that’s grounded in culture, and it means our community can feel safe in making those meals together.”

Corey Kirk, proud Mununjali man and Executive Director of Deadly Choices, said, “Coles has been a valued supporter of Deadly Choices for many years, and we’re incredibly excited to formalise this partnership for the benefit of our communities.
Good Quick Tukka is a cornerstone of the Deadly Choices program because we know the food choices we make have a significant impact on our health and wellbeing. By making healthy eating more accessible, practical and enjoyable, we’re helping empower Mob to live healthier lives.
We can’t wait to see how this deadly partnership with Coles and Nornie will inspire and empower more people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make healthy food choices and cook up deadly feeds for themselves, their families and their communities.”
