Eating the right foods promotes good health and can reduce our risk of chronic health problems.
- Aim to eat 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables each day.
- Drink water when you’re thirsty, instead of sugar-heavy soft drinks and juices.
- Try to eat foods that are high in fibre and nutrients like vitamins and minerals.
- Limit your intake of foods containing saturated fat, added salt, added sugars, and alcohol.
- Choose desserts that contain low fat milk or yoghurts and fruits.
- Make sure your portion sizes are in keeping with the Australian Dietary Guidelines’ serve sizes.
- Eat regularly so that you are less likely to overeat or eat foods that are heavy in fat, salts, and sugars.
- Don’t skip breakfast – you’ll be more likely to be tempted by large serves at the next meal or unhealthy snacks.
- Eat at the dining table and with other people when possible. People who eat in front of the TV or alone are less likely to listen to the body’s signals about being full.
