About the DC Education Programs
We want to support and empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make healthy eating choices, complete regular exercise, and prevent and manage chronic diseases to improve their overall health & wellbeing outcomes.
Since our inception in 2010, our core mission has been to educate and empower South East Queensland’s Indigenous communities, ensuring they have the confidence and knowledge to make healthy choices. With a special focus on youth, Deadly Choices emphasises the vital aspects of identity, healthy relationships, nutrition, physical activity, abstaining from tobacco and e-cigarettes (vapes), regular school attendance, and maintaining up-to-date 715 Health Checks.
Integral to our approach are the Deadly Choices Education Programs, which play a pivotal role in educating and empowering our Mob. The flagship program, the Healthy Lifestyle Program, offers high school-aged and community participants a comprehensive understanding of various life-relevant topics, including tobacco and alcohol awareness, nutritional guidance, leadership skills, and building healthy relationships. The success of this program prompted the creation of a junior version tailored for primary school students, alongside specialised programs such as our Tobacco Programs, 'Good Quick Tukka,' and others.
Our programs are predominantly facilitated by young, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members of our community. This approach ensures a culturally safe learning environment where participants can easily relate to the program officers. Spanning 6-8 weeks, these programs are designed to progressively build upon each other, instilling good cultural values and equipping our younger community members with the tools needed for a promising and healthy future.
