Because of Her We Can

Celebrating our women | Artist: Elaine Chambers-Hegarty

Elaine Chambers-Hegarty is an Indigenous Graphic Designer and Artist - with  cultural links to the Koa and Kuku Yalanji people.

Her artwork is a contemporary representation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women that have been here before us, and their pathways that have led us on our journeys and struggles in life.

She chose to use vibrant colours because this year’s NAIDOC theme celebrates what our women have achieved over the years, and I wanted to celebrate the power and the strength of the women.

Those colours are also colours we see in our flora. Embracing the colours of our plant life that are amongst this wonderful land. The pinks, oranges and yellows of the flowers and the sunsets. Plus the blues and purples that are also found in the native plants and native fruits.

The circles represent a flow of energy and a flow of knowledge shared from our elders down to our young and a connection of the journey our stories travel.
