Willie Tonga

Former rugby league player

Willie’s Deadly Choice: Is to stay hydrated.

Willie Tonga is a proud Tongan and Wiradjuri man.

He grew up in Queensland playing rugby league as a junior for Cherbourg and at 19 years old was scouted by rugby league legend Arthur Beetson and moved to Parramatta, signing with the Eels for the 2002 season.

Just two short years later Tonga signed with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and immediately tasted NRL premiership success. He went on to carve out a 181-game NRL career with the Eels, Bulldogs and Cowboys between 2002-2014. He played 12 Tests for Australia and represented Queensland on eight occasions. Ahead of the 2015 season, Willie flagged a move to the Super League, where he played three more seasons for the Catalans Dragons, Leigh Centurions and Bradford Bulls.

As a Deadly Choices Ambassador, Willie wants to draw on his personal experiences to educate others about the importance of health, education and wellbeing.
